Richard Mendelsohn

Richard Mendelsohn – CPA, CA, Ph.D., CPA (Illinois)

Partner, Small Business Practice Leader

Richard joined the Stern Cohen team in 2009 as Manager and became Partner in January 2015.

Specializing in assurance and advisory, Richard has extensive knowledge in the small business and tax realms. In 2013, he started Stern Cohen’s dedicated Small Business Practice in response to client needs he was seeing. Now, Stern Cohen has a full service solution for small and mid-size businesses in the GTA that includes bookkeeping, financial reporting, tax and advisory.

Richard’s attentive nature provides clients with the type of consideration they expect with quality service. He makes sure he is always available, helping their business grow with each issue they face.

After graduating from Cornell with an undergraduate degree in Biology, Richard attended the Boston University School of Medicine, obtaining a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. In Canada, Richard received a Master’s degree from the University of Toronto’s Masters in Management and Professional Accounting (MMPA) Program at the Rotman School. Not only does he hold his CPA, CA designation here, but he is also a certified CPA with the State of Illinois.

Richard believes the firm’s strength is in the proper training and support of the entire team. When he needs something specific completed, he knows his team members will be able to finish it in a timely and skillful manner.

When he’s not at the office, Richard can be found hanging out with his wife and three kids. He’s a huge sports fan, and in the summer you can find him at the Rogers Centre cheering on his favourite team — no, not the Blue Jays, the Yankees, of course.

What’s the most rewarding thing about being an accountant?

Being in a position to affect positive change for our clients’ businesses and organizations is a strong driver for me. At the end of the day, the results of my and my team’s efforts translate into happy clients – and that is immensely rewarding.

What’s different about Stern Cohen?

We’re not so big that there’s too much red tape, and not so small that we can’t handle big issues. We’re adaptable and accessible and we provide customized service for every client because we have enough resources and time. That makes our clients really happy.
