COVID Recovery Benefits – New EI Programs

The federal government has created three new EI (Employment Insurance) programs to assist those impacted by COVID-19, but not eligible for traditional EI. Here is a description of the programs. Links to apply are at the end of the article.

1. Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB)

Provides $1,000 ($900 after tax withheld) per 2-week period for self-employed persons or other workers not eligible for traditional EI that are directly impacted by COVID-19.

  • Must reapply after 2 weeks.
  • May apply up to a total of 26 weeks between September 27, 2020 and September 25, 2021.

2. Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit (CRSB)

Provides $500 ($450 after tax withheld) for a 1 week period for those unable to work because they are sick or need to self-isolate due to COVID.

  • Must reapply after the first week.
  • May apply for up to a total of two weeks between September 27, 2020 and September 25, 2021.

3. Canada Recovery Caregiving Benefit (CRCB)

Provides $500 ($450 after tax withheld) per week for up to a total of 26 weeks between September 27, 2020 and September 25, 2021. Is intended to provide support to those unable to work (and not eligible for traditional EI) because they must care for:

    1. Their child under 12 years of age if their school or daycare is closed or unavailable due to COVID;
    2. Family member who needs supervised care and whose regular program or care facility is closed due to COVID;
    3. Child under 12 or family members who need surprised care and is sick, self isolating, or at risk of serious health complications due to COVID-19.
